Munch Madness Round III: Don't Go Bacon My Heart
The lunchers, brunchers, munchers and snackers of Guthrie County have once again delivered a delicious verdict. The more than 7,000 votes received over the last few days brought the field of eight local non-chain restaurants down to a fierce final four to move forward into round three of Munch Madness.
Heartbreak was the name of this week’s game, as four more eateries boasting mouth watering fare said goodbye. But when the field gets this small, the voting margins so narrow, and the race to the finish line, and the championship, so close, no one is safe.
Here are this week’s results:
Owl’s Nest vs. Hilltop Cafe — Winner: Owl’s Nest
Owl’s Nest came out swinging this week, and from the get go, was in it to win it. Racking up 86 percent of voter support, the Panora bar made it clear that defeat was not an option. Guthrie Center’s Hilltop Cafe was no slouch in the match up, and rode in confident after a strong win over PJ’s Drive In last week. But the onslaught of spicy buffalo wings, towering hamburgers and cheese loaded nachos from the Owl’s Nest left Hilltop Cafe without a table leg to stand on.
La Villa vs. Prime Time — Winner: La Villa
What began as a slow start for Guthrie Center’s La Villa has slowly but surely grown into what could be a championship run. The Mexican restaurant shredded its opponent, Guthrie Center’s Prime Time, like they shred their zesty cheddar cheese for their piping hot quesadillas. Their two-for-one margarita nights and cinnamon dusted churros only sealed Prime Time’s fate.
Menlo Cafe vs. Billy Vee’s — Winner: Menlo Cafe
Perhaps one of the greatest underdog stories of all time in the making, the Menlo Cafe is on a mission to prove that size, in fact, does not matter. Representing the town of Menlo, with just over 300 residents, the cafe defeated fan favorite Billy Vee’s in Panora. The Italian restaurant was heavily weighted to bring home the bacon, but the Menlo Cafe — with its simple homemade cuisine — pulled off the W. Now that’s a spicy meatball.
Los Altos vs. The Links Restaurant and Lounge — Winner: Los Altos
Stuart’s Los Altos dominated its contest against Lake Panorama’s The Links Restaurant and Lounge, snagging 72 percent of the vote. The Mexican restaurant dished out burritos and fajitas until the cows came home, spelling the end for The Links.
The Next Course
In the next round of competition, the final four restaurants in Guthrie County’s Munch Madness will face off, to decide which two finalists makes it into the last round. Owl’s Nest will square off against La Villa for one of the two spots up for grabs. And Los Altos and the Menlo Cafe will dual for the other. The end of Munch Madness is near, and the crowning of a champion is on the horizon. So let’s make it count.
Be sure to vote for which restaurants you want to see duke it out in the top two. Voting to decide who makes it one step closer to victory will begin on Wednesday, and continue until Monday at 8 a.m. Voting can be done online, or in our office at 205 State St. in Guthrie Center.
