Munch Madness Round IV: It takes two to mango
After three weeks of intense mouthwatering competition, the finish line for Guthrie County Munch Madness is in sight.
Of the original 16 local non-chain eateries entered in the contest, only two remain. The rest were left behind in a savory cloud of chili powder and garlic salt, according to the wishes of voters deciding which Guthrie County restaurant deserves to be named number one.
It was no surprise that this round saw the most voter participation yet, with more than 15,000 ballots cast. Then again, the stakes have never been higher, with the top two spots of the competition — and a place in the last round — up for grabs.
The final four restaurants came out with drink shakers blazing, all armed with their shiniest silverware and most appealing appetizers. But only two could carry on their quest to claim the title of Guthrie County Munch Madness champion.
Here are this week’s results:
Owl’s Nest vs. La Villa — Winner: Owl’s Nest
Play to win and take no prisoners was the strategy for the Owl’s Nest’s this week. The Panora bar entered the second to last round of Munch Madness, against Guthrie Center’s Mexican restaurant, La Villa, with its eye on the prize, and had no qualms about showing it out on the field. Owl’s Nest opened with a strong lead and carried it through all the way to the end, earning a spot in the final round, and a chance to bring home the top title.
Los Altos vs. Menlo Cafe — Winner: Los Altos
This match up was a nail biter from start to finish. There has not been a less clear cut picture of who had the upper hand in a match up throughout this entire competition. The Menlo Cafe — from its namesake town of Menlo — broke away with an early lead. Then Stuart’s Mexican restaurant Los Altos put it into high gear and surged ahead. The Menlo Cafe again pulled out all the stops for a comeback. And finally, Los Altos decided enough was enough, and kicked it into overdrive for a come-from behind win as the polls closed.
The Final Course
There is only one more round of Munch Madness left, and it’s the most important one of them all. You, the culinary connoisseurs of Guthrie County, must decide who will be crowned the champion, the best of the best. Will it be the Owl’s Nest, slinging slammin’ bar food, that takes the cake? Or will it be the Mexican flair of Los Altos’ cuisine that seals the deal? Only you can decide.
Voting to pick who should win Munch Madness is now open, and will continue until Monday at 8 a.m. To vote, visit the link at the bottom of this page, or stop in our office at 205 State St. in Guthrie Center to cast a paper ballot.
