A Panorama Schools graduate is coming home to entertain the audience during halftime at the home football game this Friday.
Lindsey Moon, a 2008 graduate, and another member of the Eastern Iowa Circus Collective, will perform circus tricks such as fire breathing, hula-hoop dancing and aerial acrobatics.
Moon founded the Eastern Iowa Circus Collective after Joy Fisher, the owner of Elevate Vertical Fitness where Moon and her friends used to exercise, died in 2017.
“The Circus Collective is a group of people who were training at her studio,” Moon said. “Upon her death the studio closed because there was no one to run it, so the Circus Collective is a group of her students.”
While Moon’s full-time job is a producer for the Iowa Public Radio shows “The Collective” and “River to River,” she said continuing Fisher’s work is important to her because the circus acts allow people to engage their minds and bodies.
Moon said she doesn’t necessarily run the studio, rather she helps coordinate a group of formers and teachers.
“It’s set up in a collective place,” Moon said. “So it’s not my studio.”
Growing up in the Panorama school system, Moon said, allowed for her to be involved in both athletics and art programs, which inspired her to enter the circus arts.
“It gave me a unique opportunity to engage my artist mind and my body,” Moon said. “My goal is for more people to be able to do that.
“I feel lucky to have grown up in a space where I was encouraged to do both and didn’t have to do one thing,” Moon continued.
She said she encourages everyone to check out the circus arts, and said there are three great studios in Des Moines anyone can get involved with.
Circus arts help with everything from coordination to core strength and flexibility, Moon said.
Moon will be performing Friday, August 31 during the halftime show at the Panorama football game. The Panthers will take on Manson Northwest Webster. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
