JAMES “PETE” PETERSON
James “Pete” Peterson, 76, son of Ora and Leona (Coffin) Peterson, was born July 15, 1940 in Perry, Iowa. He passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016 at the Taylor Hospice House, Des Moines, Iowa after a very short stay.
A memorial service was held Monday, October 17, at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora. Burial of his cremains will be in the West Cemetery, Panora.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Panora Fire Department or the Taylor House Hospice, Des Moines.
Jim graduated from Panora High School in 1958. Following high school, he went to work for Flanery Farms in Guthrie Center. He was drafted into the United States Army, serving from July 9, 1963 to July 8, 1965 during the Vietnam War.
He married Glennis Smith on January 7, 1967 at the Panora First Christian Church. They made their home in Panora. To this union daughter Kirsten was born in 1973. Jim worked for Heartland Coop for 55 years, retiring in June of 2016.
Jim became a pretty good cook where Kraft Mac & Cheese was a common meal for Kirsten and him as Glennis worked nights. He enjoyed time with his family and friends. He loved to be around his granddaughter Hailey. He was proud to be a papa and will always have a special place with Hailey, as he was asked to have his name, James, as Hailey’s middle name. He enjoyed antiques and watching or traveling to see old farming techniques and old farm equipment. Jim was a man of few words, kind hearted, and was willing to help anyone who needed it.
He was an active member of the Panora Fire Department for 23 years holding many offices and serving in many other capacities.
He is survived by his wife, Glennis (Smith) Peterson of Panora; daughter, Kirsten (Andrew) Meacham of Stuart; beloved granddaughter, Hailey Meacham; brother, Donald (L’Vene) Peterson of Bayard; sisters-in-law, Joy Smith of Oskaloosa; Mary Smith of Panora; and Carmen Smith of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Dennis (Kim) Smith of Panora; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Audrey Smith; Bill Smith; sister-in-law, Gail Smith.
