1947-2015 Surrounded by his loving family, Sam Steensen, 67, of Guthrie Center, passed away from complications of Kennedy’s Disease on January 3, 2015, at the Guthrie County Hospital. Services were held Wednesday, January 7 at the First Presbyterian Church in Guthrie Center. Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church, Guthrie County Hospital or Kennedy’s Disease Association. Sam was born to Norman and Marion Steensen on March 31, 1947. He attended Guthrie Center schools, Iowa State University and the University of Iowa where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Sam married his high school sweetheart, Bev Hoover, on September 1, 1968. They began their married life in Iowa City as they finished their college degrees. They spent the next three years living in Oahu, Hawaii, where Sam was employed by the U.S. Government as an engineer working on various projects including the Poseidon Missile. In 1972, they moved home to Guthrie Center where Sam joined his father to manage Steensen Gas and Electric. He greatly valued his community where he was active as a volunteer and leader, serving many organizations. He was most proud of his role as father to their three children: Lisa, Scott, and Melia. Sam will be forever loved and remembered by his wife of 46 years, Bev, children Lisa (Chris) Rhodes of Ankeny, Scott (Maren) Steensen of Urbandale, and Melia (Eric) Van Meter of Guthrie Center. He has four treasured grandchildren, Samuel, Olivia, Emerson, and Kiersten. He is also survived by his sister Susan (Ken) Kiesau, brother Steve (Merle Anne) Steensen, father-in-law Oris Hoover, sister-in-law Barb (Gregg) Saltsgaver, as well as many friends and relatives.
