Panorama defending golf champs off to record start
Defending Class 2A boys state golf champion Panorama opened the season by winning a 10-team meet on April 8 in near record fashion, and in less than desirable weather conditions won a conference meet in Panora on April 10.
Freshman and junior golf phenom Kolby Shackelford lived up to his reputation by shooting a school record 68 on a par 71 course on April 8 at the Crestwood Hills layout at Anita. Teammate Will Babcock held the old mark of 70 set at the 2015 state tournament in Ames.
George Appleseth also broke par, carding a 70, while Babcock checked in with 76, the third best total of the tourney. Trey Cobb’s 88 was the other counting score. Mitch Wagler and Dylan Douglass shot 90 and 95 respectively.
The team score of 302 was two shots off the school record.
Other team scores were Exira-Elk Horn- Kimballton 337, Audubon 374, CAMAnita 376, Bedford 393, West Central Valley 401, Southwest Valley 413, East Mills 422, Panorama JV 435 and Glidden Ralston 454.
Coach Hal Rossow termed the initial start for the team “unbelievable.”
The Panthers ran their record to 11-0 on April 10 with wins over Woodward-Granger and Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center.
“Conditions were horrible,” said coach Rossow.”It was a very cold and windy day. Will Babcock shot unbelievably well for the conditions.”
Panorama totaled 165 strokes while WoodwardGranger trailed at 189 and AC/GC at 300.
Babcock was a medalist with a low round 35. Teammates Shackelford and Appleseth were runner-up with 40. Both Mitch Wagler and Dylan Douglass carded 50 for the Panthers and Jacob Iseminger shot 56.
