Panthers send five wrestlers to State
Five wrestlers will compete in the Class 1-A state wrestling tournament for Panorama this week after a strong showing at the February 11 district tournament in Underwood.
The Panthers placed second in the 14-team district tournament, crowning a pair of champions and three runner-ups. They advanced five wrestlers to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines for the state championships, which run Thursday, February 16, through Saturday, February 18. Five state qualifying wrestlers is the most in Panorama program history to compete on the state mat in the same year.
Senior Tyler Van Houten won the 152-pound title and junior Gunnar Grunsted was the 170-pound champion. Earning a trip to state with second place finishes Saturday were senior George Appleseth at 132 pounds, junior Dalton Holmes at 195 pounds, and junior Dan Jensen at 285 pounds.
Appleseth, who is 41-8 this season, will be making his third trip to the state tournament. This will be the second trip for Van Houten (50-3), Grunsted (41-10) and Jensen (27-18) and the first for Holmes (44-9).
Danny Nordquist (120) finished third at the district meet for the Panthers. Emry Colby (138) and Ondrej Komora (160) were both fourth as the Panthers qualified a school-record eight wrestlers for the district tournament.
“Danny Nordquist made a furious comeback against fourth-ranked Tatum Bluml from Riverside, but fell two points short to go to state,” Panorama wrestling coach Jason Kirtley said. “Danny, Emry and Ondrej all wrestled outstanding today. We are very proud of the effort today and all season long.”
Underwood won the 14-team title with 105 points and Panorama was second with 86. The Class 1-A state wrestling tournament got underway Thursday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. Coverage of Panorama wrestlers at the state tournament will appear in next week’s Guthrie County Vedette.
