The retail landscape in Idaho is undergoing a notable shift as several major chains announce store closures. Macy’s, a historic department store founded in 1858, recently revealed plans to close its Coeur d’Alene store and 65 others across 22 states.
These closures are part of Macy’s broader strategy, which aims to focus on more profitable stores while trimming down its unproductive locations.
This decision marks a continued decline in Macy’s presence in Idaho, a trend that has been ongoing since the Great Recession and the rise of online shopping. In total, Macy’s will have closed eight stores in the state since 2009.
Other retailers are also scaling back in the Boise area. Kohl’s plans to close 27 stores nationwide, including its Boise Towne Square location. Big Lots, Family Dollar, and other pharmacy chains like Walgreens and Rite Aid have also downsized, with several locations shuttering in the region.
The wave of closures reflects broader retail trends and the challenges faced by both national chains and local businesses in adapting to changing consumer habits.
