18 charged in colonial heights elder abuse scandal; two arrested without bond

Colonial Heights Police have filed criminal charges against 18 employees of the Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center as part of an ongoing elder abuse investigation.

Two individuals, Shawanda Jeter, 46, of Richmond, and Danielle Harris, 53, of Disputanta, have been arrested. Both served as staff members at the 196-bed facility, with each facing one felony charge of abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults.

Jeter and Harris are currently held without bond at Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George County.

The investigation began after an October 5 report from the Virginia Department of Adult Protective Services regarding a discharged patient who later passed away.

Authorities from the Attorney General Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, Colonial Heights Police Department, and the Virginia Department of Health are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

The inquiry remains ongoing, and officials are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
