2024 U-Haul Migration Trends: South Carolina Leads, California Sees Decline

In 2024, domestic migration trends show a notable shift in the flow of people moving to and from various states, according to U-Haul data. South Carolina emerged as the top destination for one-way U-Haul rentals, while California ranked last for incoming rentals. Wyoming and Montana, which had seen growth in recent years, experienced a more balanced or slight decline in newcomers.

Wyoming dropped significantly in U-Haul’s rankings, falling 22 spots from 14th to 36th. For the first time in five years, the state experienced slightly more departures than arrivals, indicating a shift toward a break-even migration trend. Montana, while still a popular destination, also saw a slight decrease in its net gain, though it remains a net-gain or break-even state for the sixth consecutive year.

Montana’s most popular destinations for newcomers included cities like Missoula and Kalispell, with Missoula being ranked the 20th fastest-growing city in the U.S. in 2024. Despite this growth, U-Haul reports that anecdotally, some residents from Bozeman are relocating to more affordable states like South Carolina, citing the high cost of housing and taxes as driving factors for their move.

In contrast, Idaho continues to experience a population boom, ranking as the 10th fastest-growing state of 2024. The state, particularly Boise and Coeur d’Alene, has seen significant increases in newcomers due to affordable property options, access to rural lifestyles, and the expansion of job opportunities. This marks the fourth consecutive year Idaho has been in the top 10 growth states, with Boise being a key attraction for individuals seeking both rural living and urban amenities.

Overall, U-Haul’s data highlights shifting migration patterns, with some states, like Idaho and South Carolina, seeing consistent growth, while others, like Wyoming and Montana, are experiencing more moderate or declining trends.
