PHOENIX — Victor Manual Vargas, a convicted Arizona drug trafficker, was sentenced to 15 years in prison last Tuesday, following his guilty plea on charges of illegally conducting an enterprise and possessing dangerous drugs for sale. His sentencing comes a month after he pleaded guilty, with several initial charges dropped as part of his plea deal.
Vargas was indicted in June 2024 on nine counts, but most of the charges were dismissed during the proceedings. Two other individuals involved in the case, Perla Vargas and Paulo Quezada Espinoza, have yet to stand trial.
The investigation, led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration DEA and the Scottsdale Police Department, dismantled a significant drug trafficking ring in Arizona.
Authorities seized substantial quantities of illegal substances, including 142 pounds of methamphetamine, 53 pounds of fentanyl (approximately 241,000 pills), 3 pounds of cocaine, 1.5 pounds of heroin, $24,000 in cash, and a handgun.
The prosecution of Vargas was handled by the Drug and Racketeering Enforcement Section of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office Criminal Division. Attorney General Kris Mayes emphasized the importance of the state’s collaborative efforts with federal and local law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and curb the flow of fentanyl in Arizona.
