cedar rapids sees 88% drop in homicides as crime rates plummet in 2024

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Violent crime in Cedar Rapids has decreased, according to new data released by the Cedar Rapids Police Department on Tuesday.

The report compares the first 11 months of 2024 with the same period in 2023.

Homicides have seen a significant drop, down by 88%. So far this year, only one homicide has been recorded by CRPD, compared to eight during the same timeframe last year. The five-year average for homicides in Cedar Rapids is nine per year.

The sole homicide in 2024 involves Anthony Fitts, who was fatally stabbed in January. Charmisha Pirtle has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the case.

Other crimes, including aggravated assaults, burglaries, vehicle thefts, thefts from vehicles, and incidents involving shots fired, have also declined.
