Around noon on Sunday, December 15, Green Shift crews responded to a house fire on the 2200 block of Elmendorf Street. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the eaves of a multi-family duplex.
The fire originated in a single bedroom where a nine-year-old child had been playing with a candle. The child suffered burns on his leg and foot. According to the Chattanooga Fire Department, he was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
The American Red Cross is stepping in to assist the affected residents.
The Chattanooga Fire Department shared an important reminder for parents:
“Please talk to your children about the dangers of playing with things like matches, lighters, and candles. This family has been displaced from their home right before Christmas, and a child was left with burn injuries after this mishap.”
