Clarke county shooting: 35-year-old in critical condition, suspect arrested

CLARKE COUNTY, Iowa — A New Virginia man remains in critical condition after being shot in his driveway Thursday afternoon.

Around 12:30 p.m., the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting in the 1000 block of 315th Avenue in rural Clarke County, northeast of Liberty. Upon arrival, first responders found a 35-year-old man with gunshot wounds. He was transported in critical condition to a Des Moines hospital by air ambulance.

According to a criminal complaint, 32-year-old George William Douglas called 911, admitting he had shot the victim in the driveway. Douglas allegedly told law enforcement several times that the victim had recently provided him with bad drugs.

Authorities arrested Douglas at his home on Pacific Street in Woodburn, southeast of Liberty. He faces charges including Attempted Murder, Going Armed with Intent, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Major Crime Unit is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
