Colorado Cracks Down on Improper Use of Express Lanes Starting January 1st

Colorado is implementing stricter enforcement for improper use of express lanes starting January 1st. The Colorado Department of Transportation CDOT will utilize electronic enforcement with cameras and sensors to monitor drivers who weave in and out of toll lanes along US-36, I-70 through Denver, and the I-25 South Gap.

Drivers must enter or exit express lanes only at designated, marked locations, and violators will face a $75 fine that could increase if unpaid.

During a 30-day grace period, CDOT issued over 23,000 warnings, which could have generated approximately $1.7 million in fines.

However, starting January 1, fines will be issued for violations. This initiative is part of CDOT’s broader safety program, aimed at reducing traffic fatalities, with an 80% decrease in violations on the I-70 Mountain corridor since the program’s introduction.

The revenue from these fines will be reinvested in corridor maintenance, debt repayment, and safety improvements.

CDOT continues efforts to improve signage and educate drivers, with the goal of further reducing violations and enhancing road safety.
