Connecticut Officials Urge Vigilance After Deadly Terrorist Incidents in New Orleans and Las Vegas

CONNECTICUT, USA — In the wake of violent incidents in New Orleans and Las Vegas on January 1, Connecticut officials are urging residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity using the CT Safe Mobile App.

The incidents began in New Orleans, where a truck driven by 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, a Texas resident, plowed into a crowd near Bourbon and Canal streets around 3:15 a.m., resulting in 14 deaths and 25 injuries. The FBI has confirmed that Jabbar acted alone and was reportedly inspired by the Islamic State group.

Hours later, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside of President-Elect Donald Trump’s hotel in Las Vegas, killing the suspect inside. Investigators found firework mortars and camp fuel canisters in the vehicle, prompting a terrorism investigation. Several bystanders sustained minor injuries.

In response to these tragedies, the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection DESPP has issued a statement emphasizing the importance of vigilance in the community. DESPP Commissioner Ronald Higgins expressed sorrow over the violence and urged citizens to stay alert to help prevent similar incidents in Connecticut.

“We must remain proactive in our efforts to protect our communities, Higgins said. I assure the people of Connecticut that we are ready to respond to any potential threats.

The department encourages residents to report suspicious behavior using the CT Safe Mobile App, available for both Android and iOS, or by calling 911, 860-HLS-TIPS, or submitting an online report through the state’s Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

Officials highlighted several indicators of suspicious activity, including unusual interest in security information, covert use of cameras, attempts to access sensitive areas, and modifications to vehicles.

Deputy DESPP Commissioner Brenda Bergeron emphasized the importance of community involvement in maintaining public safety. “Your vigilance is crucial in ensuring our collective security,” she stated.

While Connecticut authorities have not identified any specific threats to the state, they urge residents to be mindful and report any concerning activities immediately.
