Destination downtown Waynesboro embarks on main street revitalization journey

Waynesboro will join a two-year cohort program aimed at exploring downtown revitalization and fostering economic growth.

Destination Downtown Waynesboro (DDW) is participating in the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s 2025-26 Mobilizing Main Street Program.

This program offers a structured approach to help Exploring Main Street communities work toward becoming designated Virginia Main Street communities and achieving Main Street America accredited status.

“This program is exactly what we need to bring renewed energy and focus to our downtown revitalization efforts,” said Meghan Swanson, acting president of DDW. “It’s a tremendous opportunity to strengthen our foundation and build partnerships that reflect the creativity, energy, and potential of our community. We’re excited to start shaping the future of downtown Waynesboro.”

In collaboration with DHCD staff, DDW will focus on fostering economic opportunities for the community.

The program includes creating personalized work plans, meeting key benchmarks, and offering support with market analysis, design assessments, grant management, leadership transitions, volunteer development, and other critical strategies for success.

“For more than 40 years, the Virginia Main Street Program has been transforming communities and remains a vital force in economic development, small business growth, and job creation,” said Bryan Horn, DHCD director. “This program supports local development efforts and ensures participating organizations achieve sustainable success within the Virginia Main Street framework.”

The cohort program is funded through the Virginia Main Street program.
