election battle 2024: could january 6 tensions resurface?

If former President Donald Trump falls short in the 2024 presidential election, his MAGA supporters appear poised to challenge the results and push efforts to reinstall him in power.

CNN reports that the “Stop the Steal” movement has “reemerged in force” ahead of the 2024 election, with its leaders drafting a detailed plan to contest the results if Trump loses again. Their strategy includes filing legal challenges, pressuring lawmakers to halt election certification, and organizing protests, all leading up to January 6, 2025—the day Congress is set to certify the results.

However, it’s uncertain why these tactics would succeed in 2024 when similar efforts failed four years ago.

A repeat attempt to disrupt election certification on January 6 seems especially unlikely to work, given the expectation of significantly heightened security at the Capitol.

Even so, Ivan Raiklin, a former Green Beret and MAGA political operative, remains confident about the movement’s plans. “I have a plan and strategy,” he said earlier this month. “And then January 6th is going to be pretty fun.”

Marc Harris, a former investigator for the January 6th House Select Committee, expressed concerns to CNN about the potential unpredictability of the “Stop the Steal” movement, despite increased security measures.

“Those looking to overturn the election are way ahead of where they were in 2020,” Harris noted. “But on the flip side, the pro-democracy defenders are also more prepared. How that shakes out is not clear to me.”
