Emotional Homecoming for Michigan National Guard Soldiers After Nearly a Year of Service

The return of Michigan soldiers from overseas after nearly a year of deployment was a moment of great joy and emotional relief for their families.

The soldiers, part of the Michigan Army National Guard 272nd Regional Support Group, had been serving in support of U.S. Central Command, with some stationed in Iraq and others in Kuwait.

For families like Isabelle Swab’s, whose father was deployed, the time apart felt like both a fleeting moment and an eternity. “In a way it was just like a blink of an eye, but at the same time it felt like an eternity,” she shared.

For Eva Snedden, who had been separated from her husband, the last two weeks were particularly challenging.

Despite the hardship, the soldiers received an overwhelming amount of support, with Captain Daniel Sackmann, the group commander, expressing gratitude for the care packages and community backing.

The support that we got from everybody the entire deployment, it’s mind-blowing,” he said, noting that the hundreds of care packages played a significant role in keeping spirits high.

Now, after almost a year of separation, the families are finally reunited, marking a long-awaited homecoming.
