FDA Issues Urgent Recall for Costco Eggs Due to Salmonella Risk

Attention Costco shoppers in the Southeastern U.S.! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for hundreds of thousands of eggs sold at Costco locations due to the risk of salmonella contamination. These eggs, supplied by Handsome Brook Farms, were recalled on December 20, 2024, under the FDA’s Category 1 classification, which signifies a high risk of serious health issues, including death, if consumed.

This follows a previous voluntary recall in November 2024, where over 10,000 cartons of eggs from Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand were pulled from shelves due to concerns of salmonella, though no illnesses were reported at that time.

Affected Areas:
Eggs from the recall were sold in 25 Costco locations across Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee starting November 22, 2024.

Details of the Recall:
The recall was initiated after Handsome Brook Farms discovered that eggs intended for non-retail distribution were accidentally packaged and sold in retail packaging. The company is implementing additional supply chain controls and retraining to prevent future occurrences.

Product Details:

  • Julian Code: 327
  • Use-By Date: January 5, 2025
  • Impacted Brand: Kirkland Signature
  • No other products are affected.

Health Warning:
Salmonella can cause severe symptoms like fever, diarrhea, and nausea, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. It can even be fatal in some cases.

If you purchased eggs with these product codes, it is recommended to discard them immediately. For more information, consult the FDA’s official recall notice.
