Fetterman Supports Trump’s Greenland Acquisition Idea: What Does It Mean for U.S. Foreign Policy?

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has expressed openness to Donald Trump’s idea of the U.S. acquiring Greenland, describing it as a “strategically smart thing.

Fetterman’s remarks, made to reporters on Wednesday, reflect a somewhat surprising endorsement of an expansionist idea that Trump has previously floated. He added that his support for such a move would depend on Denmark’s approval, as Greenland is an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty.

Fetterman’s comments followed a meeting with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club, where they discussed Greenland and other expansionist ideas, such as the potential reacquisition of the Panama Canal.

After the meeting, Trump praised Fetterman, calling him a “commonsense person” and complimented him and his wife. Fetterman had joked before the meeting that Trump might appoint him as “Pope of Greenland.”

In response to the growing attention around these discussions, House Republicans have already introduced a bill to facilitate negotiations between the U.S. and Denmark.

However, Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede made it clear that Greenlandic people value their independence, stating that they do not want to be governed by Denmark or the U.S., emphasizing their desire to remain Greenlandic.
