Fungi in eye care products can cause serious eye infections, which could harm vision or even be life-threatening for people with weakened immune systems.
Although no issues have been reported so far, the Department of Health is advising people to check their Systane eye drops for a recalled lot number. If your product matches, stop using it.
To find out if your drops are part of the recall, check the lot number and expiration date on the bottom of the packaging or on each vial.
If you have a recalled product, you can return it to the store for a refund or replacement. Hawaii residents can contact Alcon Laboratories’ customer service at 1-800-241-5999, Monday to Friday, from 3:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. HST, for more information.
While no health problems have been reported yet, this recall reminds us that even everyday products can sometimes be risky. Keep an eye out for updates on the recall and other affected products as the Department of Health works with stores to remove the contaminated drops and keep people safe.
