Georgia Prepares for Winter Storm with Brine Treatment on Key Roads and Bridges

As a winter storm approaches Georgia, the Georgia Department of Transportation GDOT has activated its winter weather response plan to keep roads safe and traffic moving.

Crews are set to begin treating key highways, bridges, and interstates in north Georgia Wednesday night with brine to prevent ice formation.

Up to 50 brine tankers will be deployed across the state, and crews from South Georgia will reinforce northern regions. Workers will operate in 12-hour shifts for continuous coverage.

The storm is expected to bring a mix of precipitation, with one to three inches of snow in some areas and icy conditions in the metro region. GDOT is closely monitoring the system to adapt its response based on its severity.

This response is informed by lessons learned from the infamous 2014 Snowmageddon, which highlighted the need for improved winter weather preparedness.

Since then, GDOT has expanded its brine production capacity from 5,000 to 1.8 million gallons and added to its snow removal fleet, ensuring faster and more efficient treatment of roads.
