Gov. Larry Rhoden Discusses Solutions to Rising Property Taxes in South Dakota

Gov. Larry Rhoden of South Dakota is addressing concerns about rising property taxes and their impact on homeowners, predicting that a solution will be found during the current legislative session.

He highlighted the shifting tax burden, with homeowners now shouldering a larger portion of property taxes compared to agricultural landowners.

Rhoden emphasized the need for targeted relief to help those homeowners most affected by rising property values, caused by a robust housing market.

Though he didn’t specify a plan, he suggested a precise, focused approach would be better than sweeping changes.

He also noted that proposals such as increasing the state sales tax to provide property tax relief, previously suggested by Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen, were not yet on the table.
