Governor Tina Kotek Backs House Bill 3644 to Combat Homelessness in Oregon

Governor Tina Kotek’s testimony in support of House Bill 3644 is a significant step towards addressing homelessness in Oregon.

The proposed bill aims to establish a sustainable, state-funded program for homeless shelters, helping reduce unsheltered homelessness and support people transitioning into stable housing.

With $218 million allocated for the program, the legislation builds on previous efforts, including emergency funding and the statewide homelessness response initiated by the Governor.

By the end of the year, Oregon is projected to support over 4,800 shelter beds, rehouse 3,300 households, and prevent homelessness for thousands more.

This long-term plan will be administered by Oregon Housing and Community Services OHCS and coordinated regionally to ensure effective and flexible responses to homelessness across the state.

The commitment to ending homelessness and providing stability is reflected in the Governor’s words, emphasizing the urgency and scale of the crisis and the need for coordinated, ongoing support.
