Helicopters, crews mobilized to tackle growing big levels wildfire

The Big Levels fire in Augusta County has grown to about 600 acres, according to a Sunday update from the USDA Forest Service.

New Development: A seven-acre fire was discovered on National Forest System lands in the Irish Creek area of Rockbridge County on Saturday. Fire crews have constructed containment lines around the fire and are continuing mop-up operations today.

Dry conditions and gusty winds have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a fire danger statement, complicating firefighting efforts. Active fire behavior and spread are expected throughout the day, especially in areas where wind aligns with the terrain.

Currently, approximately 30 personnel, two engines, and a helicopter are assigned to the Big Levels fire, with additional resources arriving to assist, the Forest Service reported.

The Forest Service urges the public to avoid the affected areas for safety and to give fire crews the space they need to manage the situation. Residents can expect to see smoke in the area for the next several days as containment efforts continue.
