A judge has dismissed the felony theft charge against former History Nebraska director Trevor Jones, ruling that prosecutors violated his right to a speedy trial.
Lancaster County District Judge Susan Strong granted a motion filed by Jones’ defense attorney, Mallory Hughes, stating that the prosecution had failed to request a trial date within the required timeframe.
The theft charge stemmed from allegations that Jones mishandled $270,000 in donations intended to cover losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Jones had funneled the money into a new foundation he created, rather than depositing it with the state treasurer as required by law.
The Nebraska State Historical Society later agreed to repay the money. The judge’s ruling dismissed the charge with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled.
