Kellie Pickler has filed a legal petition against her late husband’s parents in a dispute over some of the late songwriter Kyle Jacobs’ belongings.
The 38-year-old country star seeks resolution through the legal system regarding property disputes involving Jacobs’ parents, Reed and Sharon Jacobs. Following Kyle’s tragic death from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in February 2023 at the age of 49, Pickler chose not to serve as the administrator of his estate. Instead, his parents assumed the role as co-administrators. According to Pickler’s filing, they “entered [her] home and obtained items of personal property after [Kyle’s] death” without her consent.
In her legal petition, Pickler asserts, “A dispute has arisen amongst the parties regarding certain personal property allegedly in [Kyle’s] possession prior to his death.”
Court documents reveal that the Jacobs sent Pickler a subpoena via the probate estate, requesting she provide a “list of assets.” The list includes firearms—three rifles, seven pistols, and a shotgun—as well as a Samurai sword, a Rolex watch, a Garmin watch, a 1957 J45 Gibson guitar, a McPherson KOA guitar, a plastic bin of baseball card albums, school awards, a Steinway Grand Model M piano, a viola, a work laptop, an iPhone, and hard drives.
Pickler’s petition states, “Included in the List of Assets are items that [Pickler] either does not have in her possession or over which right, title, and possession are disputed.”
Additionally, the filing accuses the Jacobs of failing to provide a detailed list of the items they removed from her home after Kyle’s death. Pickler is requesting that they furnish a complete inventory of these items.
In their defense, the Jacobs admit to removing items but claim it was done “at the express invitation of [Kellie] and her counsel.” They allege the items taken were limited to belongings set aside in the garage for them, asserting they do not need to provide a list since Pickler was already aware of the items.
The Jacobs further accuse Pickler of being “presently in violation of a Subpoena … issued to her for the return of the estate’s property.”
Pickler has turned to the court to mediate and resolve the ongoing conflict.
Since Kyle’s passing, Pickler has largely stayed out of the public eye. However, she made a return to the stage in April 2024, performing “The Woman I Am” at a Patsy Cline tribute concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. She has also sold the house where her husband passed away and moved to a downtown Nashville condo.
