Leah Belaire Foley has been appointed as the new United States Attorney for Massachusetts by Acting Attorney General James McHenry, bringing over 20 years of experience in federal prosecution.
Foley takes the position following the resignation of Joshua Levy, which occurred just days before President Trump assumed office.
Foley, who joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2006, has served in various capacities, including as an assistant U.S. attorney in the criminal division and deputy chief of the narcotics and money laundering unit.
She has also led the office’s organized crime and drug enforcement task force. Before becoming a federal prosecutor, Foley worked as counsel for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and as an associate at the law firm diGenova & Toensing in Washington, D.C.
In a statement, Foley expressed her honor in accepting the role, emphasizing her commitment to public service and her goal of working with local, state, and federal law enforcement to protect communities and uphold the rule of law. Although she was interviewed for the position in 2017, it was ultimately filled by Andrew Lelling at that time.
To continue in her role beyond the initial 120-day appointment, Foley must be nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.
