Man arrested in fatal shooting of woman near downtown durham

Police arrested a suspect following the fatal shooting of a woman late Sunday night near downtown Durham.

Braham Pugh, 30, of Durham, faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of 34-year-old Chaquila Little, also from Durham, according to authorities.

Pugh was being held without bail on Monday at the Durham County Jail.

The shooting occurred around 11:48 p.m. in the 900 block of Fayetteville Street. According to ABC11, the News & Observer’s newsgathering partner, Little was shot outside Jack’s In and Out Mart, located across from the Phoenix Square shopping center, just south of the Durham Freeway.

Little was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

Authorities did not confirm if Pugh and Little knew each other or if the shooting happened during another crime.

As of October 12, police reported 182 shooting victims in Durham this year, 25 of whom were killed. This marks a decrease from 32 fatal shootings during the same period over the previous two years.
