Marc Fogel’s Ongoing Detention in Russia: U.S. Lawmakers Demand Action for Release

The case of Marc Fogel, an American educator from Butler County, Pennsylvania, who has been imprisoned in Russia since 2021, continues to garner attention, especially as lawmakers push for his release.

Fogel was arrested in Russia for possessing less than an ounce of medical cannabis, which he used to treat a back injury. He was convicted of drug smuggling and drug possession, receiving a 14-year sentence in a Russian high-security penal colony.

During a Senate confirmation hearing for President-elect Trump’s pick for Secretary of State, Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick raised Fogel’s case, urging action on behalf of the detained teacher. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, also in attendance, described Fogel’s detention as an example of Russia exploiting Americans for future political bargaining.

Rubio emphasized that improving U.S.-Russian relations would be difficult without addressing the issue of wrongful detentions like Fogel’s.

The U.S. Department of State had confirmed last month that Fogel’s detention was wrongful, a designation that has brought new hope to his family and supporters. Pennsylvania Congressman Chris Deluzio, who represents Fogel’s district, expressed his continued efforts to secure Fogel’s release and reunite him with his family.

Fogel’s family, previously uncertain about the chances for his return, now express optimism in light of his wrongful detention status.
