The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced the sentencing of Mauricio Sarmiento, 35, an Ecuadorian national, to one year of non-reporting probation, a $500 fine, and a $100 special assessment for introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce.
Sarmiento, who pleaded guilty on November 20, 2024, had been operating as an unlicensed physician, providing medical care and prescription drugs in the U.S. since 2022, despite lacking the credentials to do so.
Additionally, some of the drugs he dispensed were shipped from Ecuador. Law enforcement officials seized misbranded drugs and medical equipment from him during a September 2024 raid.
The FBI’s investigation underscored the importance of protecting public health and ensuring the integrity of the healthcare system.
