Nevada Bill Aims to Speed Up Ballot Counting by Expanding Drop Boxes

This proposed legislation in Nevada aims to address delays in ballot counting and processing, particularly concerning mail-in ballots.

Assembly Bill 306 would increase the number of drop boxes in Clark County in the days after early voting ends and before Election Day. By adding more drop boxes, the bill seeks to alleviate the surge in ballots dropped off on Election Day, which caused delays in tabulation during the 2024 election.

Clark County, which received 83% of mail-in ballots before Election Day, saw a significant number of ballots — about 15% — arriving on Election Day, mostly via drop boxes.

This influx contributed to delays in counting, prompting officials like Democratic Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar to advocate for changes to streamline the process.

The bill would require Washoe County to provide five drop boxes and leave it to smaller counties to determine the number of drop boxes they need.

While the proposal has backing from Democratic lawmakers, Republican Governor Joe Lombardo has previously called for changes to the election process, including limiting mail-in ballot deadlines.

This legislation reflects ongoing discussions in Nevada about balancing election integrity, access to voting, and efficient ballot processing.
