New Bipartisan Law Eliminates Social Security Cuts for Georgia’s Public Servants

A new bipartisan law, championed by U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, aims to improve retirement benefits for teachers, firefighters, and law enforcement officers in Georgia.

The Social Security Fairness Act, passed in December with support from both Republicans and Democrats, eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision WEP and the Government Pension Offset GPO, policies that previously reduced or eliminated Social Security benefits for public employees and their families.

These provisions had impacted individuals who were entitled to pensions from non-Social Security-covered employment, a category that includes many public sector workers.

Senator Ossoff emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating, Educators, firefighters, and law enforcement officers already make huge sacrifices for our state and aren’t in it for the money — it makes no sense to unfairly reduce their Social Security benefits.

This law ensures that these dedicated public servants will now receive the full Social Security benefits they have earned.
