New ohio law: tracking someone electronically without permission is now illegal

A new law in ohio makes it illegal for people to place tracking devices, like an airtag, on someone’s property or use tracking apps without that person’s permission.

Governor mike dewine signed senate bill 100 into law on thursday.

Senate minority leader nickie antonio, who helped sponsor the bill, said that ohioans should be protected from privacy invasions, especially as technology keeps changing.

There is an exception in the law for parents or legal guardians who track their children under 18.

Under this law, using a tracking device without permission is a first-degree misdemeanor, but it can become a fourth-degree felony if the person has a history of stalking or a restraining order against them.

The bill, sponsored by senator nathan manning, will go into effect in march. The law was also updated in the house to include penalties for selling tobacco to minors and allow saliva tests for dui cases.
