Officer Rick Finley killed in the line of duty; suspect shot dead

The Selmer Police Department is grieving the tragic loss of Officer Rick Finley, who was fatally shot on Saturday, December 14, at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Finley responded to reports of a suspicious man in the 100 block of New Bethel Road. Upon arrival, he encountered Daniel Holmes, 39, in the driveway of a residence. Holmes had allegedly tried to break into the home and fired several shots at its door before fleeing across the street.

When Finley approached Holmes, the suspect attacked him and fired multiple gunshots, critically wounding the officer.

A lieutenant arrived at the scene and fatally shot Holmes.

The Selmer Police Department is requesting thoughts and prayers from the public as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) continues its inquiry into the incident.

Finley served part-time with the Selmer Police Department while working full-time at the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office.

In a Facebook post, the TBI expressed their condolences:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Finley’s family and friends, as well as our law enforcement partners at the Selmer Police Department and the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reported the deaths of a Selmer Police officer and a suspect following a shooting in west Tennessee.

Just after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, officers responded to reports of a suspicious person outside a home on New Bethel Road.

Upon arriving, an officer confronted Daniel Holmes, who allegedly attacked him and fired several shots, killing the officer.

A second officer responded and returned fire, fatally wounding Holmes.

TBI agents are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
