Oklahoma Superintendent Ryan Walters Faces Backlash Over Controversial Teachers’ Union Comments

Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters has stirred controversy after posting a video on the social media platform X, where he attempts to link teachers’ unions to a recent terror attack in New Orleans.

Walters, known for his strong criticism of teachers’ unions, claimed that radical left-wing groups, including teachers’ unions, are teaching children to hate America. He argued that schools are becoming terrorist training camps” due to this alleged ideology.

Walters’ comments, however, lacked any specific examples of Oklahoma schools or teachers promoting anti-American sentiments.

The video and its rhetoric have drawn backlash, including from Oklahoma lawmakers and teachers’ unions. State Rep. Jacob Rosecrants called Walters’ actions “reprehensible,” while the Oklahoma Education Association condemned the use of the tragic event for political gain. Despite this criticism, Walters received support from conservative figures, including radio host Steve Deace, who praised Walters’ stance.

This is not the first time Walters has used strong language against teachers’ unions. In the past, he referred to them as a terrorist organization and used taxpayer funds to produce videos attacking union leaders.

His latest video has amplified the divide over the role of teachers’ unions in shaping education, with supporters and detractors alike reacting strongly.
