On Thursday evening, President Joe Biden awarded former GOP Congresswoman Liz Cheney the prestigious Presidential Citizens Medal at a live-broadcast event from the White House.
Cheney, who played a pivotal role on the bipartisan Jan. 6 House select committee and was a vocal opponent of former President Donald Trump, received the country’s second-highest civilian honor for her dedication to defending the rule of law and the nation’s democratic principles.
Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, faced a significant political loss in 2022 when she was defeated in her primary election by Harriet Hageman, largely due to her public opposition to Trump.
Despite her electoral setback, Biden praised Cheney for her dignity and “decency,” emphasizing her commitment to upholding the values of freedom, integrity, and truth. The White House highlighted her willingness to work across the aisle in service to the nation, noting that her actions remind the country of what is possible through bipartisan collaboration.
Cheney was one of 20 individuals honored with the Presidential Citizens Medal that evening. Alongside her, Rep. Bennie Thompson D-MS, chair of the Jan. 6 committee, was also recognized for his steadfast commitment to truth and the defense of the rule of law.
The event underscored the administration’s belief that these individuals, through their service and sacrifice, have made the nation better.
