The funeral procession for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, will include several opportunities for the public to pay their respects.
A motorcade will depart from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and travel through Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia.
A brief pause will take place at Carter’s boyhood home, where the National Park Service will ring the farm bell 39 times in honor of his presidency.
In the afternoon, the motorcade will arrive in Atlanta, where a moment of silence will be observed in front of the state Capitol, where Carter served as governor and state senator.
The motorcade will then head to the Carter Presidential Center for a private service. Beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday and continuing until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Carter will lie in repose at the center, where the public is invited to visit and pay respects. Due to security restrictions, visitors are encouraged to take MARTA rail to King Memorial Station for shuttle transportation to the center.
Carter’s final journey will take him to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, where services will be held before returning to Georgia for a private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church.
He will be buried near his home, alongside his late wife, Rosalynn Carter. The U.S. Navy will honor Carter’s military service with a “missing man formation” flyover. The public is invited to line the motorcade route in Plains as the late president travels to his final resting place.
