The Rhode Island Bar Association has come to the defense of U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell amidst public criticism from figures like Elon Musk and others, following McConnell’s involvement in a legal case regarding President Trump’s attempt to freeze federal funding.
The case gained national attention after McConnell issued a temporary restraining order that was backed by the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, despite appeals from the Trump administration.
The controversy has led to calls for McConnell’s impeachment from Trump allies, which has raised concerns about threats to judicial independence.
The Rhode Island Bar Association President, Christopher Gontarz, strongly criticized the attacks on McConnell, stating they were unwarranted and undermined the rule of law.
McConnell has remained silent on the matter, while a hearing is scheduled for Friday in Providence regarding the case.
