Shapiro’s new license plate program pays tribute to pennsylvania’s military veterans

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Shapiro administration introduced new military-themed license plates on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The new plates are part of a law that allows the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to offer six plates honoring military veterans.

“These plates give us another way to show appreciation for the sacrifices of our military members and their families,” said Kara Templeton, PennDOT’s Deputy Secretary for Driver and Vehicle Services. “We are proud to honor our military community and their accomplishments.”

Three of the new plates recognize service members who received special medals or honors for their achievements or deployments. These plates are designed in the colors of white, blue, and gold, with an image of the awarded medal. The plates include:

Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal Plate – Applicants need to submit a completed application (MV-150) and a copy of their DD-214 discharge papers showing they received this medal.

Operation Inherent Resolve Veterans Plate – Applicants need to submit a completed application (MV-150P) and a copy of their DD-214 papers showing they took part in Operation Inherent Resolve, which includes campaigns in Iraq, Syria, and Libya.

Borinqueneers Congressional Gold Medal Plate – Applicants need to submit a completed application (MV-150P) and a copy of their DD-214 papers showing they served in the 65th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Borinqueneers, or other proof of receiving the Congressional Gold Medal.

These plates are available for $26 for cars or trucks weighing 14,000 pounds or less.

The other three new plates recognize women veterans. Two are for motorcycles, and one is for passenger cars or trucks under 14,000 pounds.

Honoring Our Women Veterans Motorcycle Plate – A special registration plate for a fund that lets people apply for it. The plate costs $41, and $15 of that goes to the Veterans Trust Fund to support programs and services that help women veterans. People who want to get an Honoring Our Veterans Special Fund Registration Plate must fill out and send in form MV-914.

Women Veteran Motorcycle Plate – This standard motorcycle plate costs $26 and has a graphic representing women veterans. Applicants need to submit a completed application (MV-150V) and a copy of their DD-214 or retired military ID.

Brig. Gen. John Pippy, head of the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, thanked the Shapiro administration for recognizing veterans’ service and contributions, especially women veterans.
