Starbucks is making a significant shift toward sustainability by introducing new compostable cups in 14 states, including Washington, starting February 11.
These new cups are made of fiber-based paperboard with bioplastic linings, moving away from traditional single-use plastic.
The change is part of Starbucks’ larger goal to make all packaging either reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2030.
The move also comes in response to local government regulations, like those in Seattle, which are increasingly mandating reductions in single-use plastic.
Customers in participating states will notice that the new cups have an opaque appearance, more akin to those used for hot drinks.
For those who still prefer plastic, Starbucks offers alternatives, such as the option to bring in a personal reusable cup or order drinks to be served in ceramic mugs or glass.
The initiative aligns with both environmental goals and a growing push to enhance the café experience by reducing to-go packaging.
