As August draws to a close, many Americans continue to rely on stimulus payments and financial assistance programs to help stabilize their budgets and maintain a comfortable standard of living.
Fortunately, several states are providing aid through targeted programs, ranging from tax relief initiatives to guaranteed income pilots and dividends for residents. Staying informed about these opportunities is crucial—nobody wants to miss out on the financial support they may be entitled to.
Which States Are Distributing Payments?
This month, three states have announced scheduled payments through their assistance programs:
New York: School Tax Relief (STAR) Program
California (Sacramento County): Guaranteed Income Pilot (payments begin September 15)
Alaska: Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) Program (payments begin September 11)
New York: STAR Program Benefits
Eligible New York homeowners may receive between $350 and $600 in relief checks. Seniors could qualify for even larger payments, ranging from $700 to $1,500. These funds are designed to ease the burden of school property taxes and provide meaningful support to households managing rising living costs.
California: Guaranteed Income Pilot
Sacramento’s Guaranteed Income Pilot provides direct financial assistance to families with young children. Payments are scheduled to begin on September 15.
Eligibility Requirements:
Must reside in one of these zip codes: 95815, 95821, 95823, 95825, 95828, or 95838
Must be a parent or legal guardian of a child aged 0–5
Annual household income must be below 200% of the federal poverty line
This program aims to reduce financial stress for working families, allowing them to better support their children’s early development.
Alaska: Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD)
Alaska residents can look forward to their Permanent Fund Dividend payments beginning September 11.
Eligibility Requirements:
Must have been a resident of Alaska for the entirety of 2024 with the intent to remain permanently
Cannot have claimed residency in another state or country since December 31, 2023
Must not have been convicted of a felony or incarcerated for multiple misdemeanors during 2024
Cannot have been outside Alaska for more than 180 days, except for qualifying reasons such as education, health, or military service
The PFD program is a long-standing benefit that provides residents with a share of the state’s oil revenue, directly boosting household income each year.
