Struggling with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Richmond Woman Faces Long Delay in SSA Disability Claim

Lowrine Ford, a 59-year-old home health aide from Richmond, Virginia, has been enduring severe pain due to rheumatoid arthritis for over a year.

The condition causes her joints to swell, burn, and ache, making it increasingly difficult for her to do her job, which involves being on her feet for long hours. Ford has had to reduce her work hours and is struggling to qualify for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration SSA, after applying in April of last year.

Ford’s experience with the SSA has been frustrating. Despite months of trying to reach the agency, she often encounters automated responses or long wait times.

When she finally managed to get a human representative on the line, she was told her application was denied in August of the previous year, but she never received any official documentation about this. Her online account has also shown contradictory information, fluctuating between different review phases, leaving her confused and uncertain about the status of her claim.

Ford has provided extensive medical documentation to the SSA, including reports from her doctors confirming her diagnosis and the severity of her condition, which should prevent her from working.

However, despite these details, she has yet to receive a definitive answer on her disability claim. While the average time to receive a decision in Virginia is around 228 days, Ford’s case has already surpassed 285 days.

Recently, she spoke with a representative who promised to review her information again and forward it to the disability board for a final decision.

In the meantime, Ford is managing her condition with multiple medications, including daily pills and injections, but the physical toll has left her exhausted. A friend has started a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her growing medical expenses as she continues to wait for the SSA’s decision.
