Sunnyvale police have arrested 33-year-old Ryan O’Reilly after he allegedly broke into the police department’s headquarters on Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., O’Reilly, upset by the building’s closure, reportedly vandalized the Fallen Officer’s Memorial by throwing flower arrangements into the parking lot.
In a fit of rage, he then used a rock to smash a glass door, gaining access to the lobby. O’Reilly threw the same rock through another door before fleeing the scene.
A records clerk inside heard the glass shattering, saw O’Reilly in the lobby, and called the police after retreating to safety. Authorities apprehended O’Reilly nearby. He faces charges of burglary, vandalism, and resisting arrest. The damage is estimated to exceed $400, which makes the charges felony-level.
While repairs are underway on the front lobby doors, the department remains open for in-person services, and visitors can use a “red phone” near the entrance to reach the Records office. No injuries were reported during the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
