The Interstate 81 Advisory Committee will meet on Friday, December 13, at 1 p.m. in the mezzanine of the Virginia Horse Center, located at 487 Maury River Road, Lexington.
A specific time during the meeting will be set aside for public comments.
The agenda, related documents, and materials for the meeting are accessible online on the dedicated website for the I-81 Corridor Improvement Program (CIP). After the meeting, a video recording of the proceedings will also be made available at the same link.
The committee is tasked with advising and making recommendations to the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) about the development and updates of the I-81 CIP, as outlined in Chapter 846 of the 2019 Acts of Assembly.
The advisory committee includes 15 voting members: seven Virginia lawmakers, three CTB members representing the Bristol, Salem, and Staunton districts, and the five chairs of planning district commissions. Additionally, the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation and the director of the Department of Rail and Public Transportation serve as nonvoting ex officio members.
The CIP aims to improve I-81 by enhancing safety and reliability, alleviating congestion, and boosting economic growth. This $3 billion program encompasses 65 construction projects and operational enhancements across 325 miles of I-81 in Virginia.
