MUSCATINE, Iowa — A police pursuit that began in Muscatine ended in Washington County on Sunday with two fatalities, including the suspect, according to officials.
Around 3:15 p.m. on December 8, the Muscatine Police Department received multiple reports of a woman driving through town and allegedly shooting at people. Officers located the suspected vehicle on Park Avenue and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. However, the driver fled, leading police on a high-speed chase along 231st Street outside the city limits.
During the pursuit, a Muscatine Police Department officer lost control of his vehicle and crashed near the Cedar River. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The chase continued with assistance from other law enforcement agencies, heading west onto U.S. Highway 218. It came to a tragic end in Washington County when the suspect, driving in the wrong lane, collided head-on with another vehicle.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver succumbed to their injuries despite lifesaving efforts, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report. Authorities are withholding the names of the deceased pending family notifications.
The Iowa State Patrol is investigating both crashes. Meanwhile, Muscatine Police confirmed that no injuries were reported during the shooting incidents and that their investigation into those reports is ongoing.
